Frequently Asked Questions
Public holidays in Spain
How many public holidays are there in Spain?
Spain has 10 national public holidays that apply across the entire country. Each autonomous community then adds 2-4 regional holidays, bringing the typical total to 12-14 per year. On top of this, each municipality can declare up to 2 local holidays (fiestas locales), which aren't shown here as they vary by town.
Do holidays differ between regions?
Yes, significantly. While the 10 national holidays are the same everywhere, regional holidays vary by autonomous community. For example, Cataluña celebrates Sant Jordi and La Diada, while Andalucía has Día de Andalucía. Some communities get Easter Monday, others get Holy Thursday. This means a public holiday in Barcelona might be a normal working day in Madrid and vice versa.
What happens when a holiday falls on a weekend?
Unlike some countries, Spain does not automatically move holidays to the nearest Monday when they fall on a weekend. The holiday is simply "lost." However, the government can occasionally transfer a national holiday to a Monday to create a long weekend (known as a puente). This is decided on a year-by-year basis and published in the BOE (Official State Gazette).
What is a "puente" in Spain?
A puente (bridge) is when a public holiday falls on a Tuesday or Thursday, and many Spaniards take the Monday or Friday off to create a 4-day weekend. While the "bridge day" isn't officially a holiday, it's extremely common for businesses to close or for employees to use a vacation day. If you're planning meetings or appointments around these dates, expect reduced availability.
